Eyes Wide Open, But Blind
“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it’s natural manure.”
Thomas Jefferson, Nov 1787 (to W. S. Smith)
This, of course, is one of the well known quotes of Jefferson’s. But, what I have to wonder is if there are people in the United States who actually have the strength of their convictions enough to ever rise as a group against the tyranny of government?
First, we must first decide who would fit into the category of those who would consider fighting. We can subtract the large majority of the liberal-progressive political group. They’re all for more and more government controlling more and more of the lives of the people of the United States. They see their freedom as coming from the government, not as being held by the people. Government is able to give away freedom by – in their thinking – giving to those less fortunate all they need to be brought up to equal status with all members of society. They feel these segments of society are discriminated against by not being cared for by all of society to insure they live a full and fruitful life. Promoting the general welfare and justice for all encompass their cries for the great nanny state. So, they’re more than happy to have government dictate to the governed.
With the liberal-progressives out of the picture, we move on to the conservatives. Like the liberal-progressives, conservative come in many different shades. To count all conservative into the group that would stand against tyranny is a mistake. The political strength of conservatism is less reliable than one may presume. Many conservatives maintain liberal-lite beliefs. They are willing to maintain more of a moderate stance on social issues than they will publicly admit. There are aspects of government support for the “greater good” of society that conservatives are not willing to forego. Unlike the liberal-progressives, the conservatives only support these aspects if they benefit one of their own, which is disingenuous of them. So within conservatism only a part, the more radical right-wing of the political group will have the conviction to stand against tyranny. That extreme right-wing will be painted as some type of supremacist radicals, militias, or domestic terrorists bent on instituting a Christian based government over society. This demonization insures that government is given a free hand to attack and dismantle the “conspiracy” against the United States of America.
That leaves the moderates, or centrists, of the political spectrum. These may well be members of the left or right, independents, or libertarians. Let’s just call them all centrists. In this portion of the political spectrum left or right are not important aspects in making political decisions. For the most part it is the idea or action being considered and its effects, or hoped for effects, that sway the decisions for or against support of the issue by centrists. Yet, centrists seldom get fed up with government to the point that they would stand against tyranny. This is likely because in their thinking there are always options open to repair the wrongs and get government back on a path that benefits the people and society. Unfortunately then this groups would stand aside in any fight against a tyrannical government. They will not recognize the truth that Jefferson understood that tyranny is never put down permanently and will raise its ugly head again.
So, you may be wondering at this point, what is all this about anyway? Not what you may think. The point of this article is the refusal of just about everyone to ignore tyranny in government and accept life as it is. As it continues to get worse the large majority of people will tolerate more and more oppression from government. People will accept the continued deterioration of the economy, the morals of society, and the confiscation of more of their wealth to prop up the decaying government structure. The complete breakdown of society will find these people in dire circumstances, unprepared to even attempt long-term survival while society strives to reestablish itself in a new form, or renewed form of the original intents of the founders of the nation.
What makes it worse is that there are voices speaking out on the tyranny of our government and the effects this tyranny is bringing about. They are not quiet voices either. The sad aspect is that those who find belief in the words of the speakers don’t find the strength within them to stand and prepare to face the civil disruptions that will likely befall this nation at some future point. Their eyes are wide open to the evidence of the future, yet they refuse to swallow their fears and realize it will happen. There isn’t a nation in the history of civilization that has not fallen at some point, and for a variety of reasons. There is no reason to believe it will be any different with the United States, regardless of how much societies and civilization has advanced in their development. It is that eyes wide open blindness that will be the undoing of the great majority of society. You will be abandoned by the very government actions you were warned about.
There will be those who survive the coming collapse, in whatever form that collapse takes. This will be a prepared remnant of society that is willing to take up the fight for survival. They will take that fight up against the government or any group that attempts to redefine freedom and impose new oppression upon them. They will be isolated. They will be declared outlaw. They will be hunted by what government remains or is instituted to replace the fallen government as dissidents and terrorists. Some will be killed. Some will be imprisoned. Some will be converted but never again trusted. But all will fight as long as they have the means and desire to restore the ideals of freedom.
Jefferson is also credited (correctly or not) with having said:
Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.
It is happening as we speak, day-by-day. Your eyes are, or should be open, so stop being blind. Accept the inevitable. Prepare and become a part of the remnant to stand against any and all tyranny!
